Bright Bridesmaids – stepping out in colour
Bridesmaids are no longer blending into the background in uniform gowns of the same colour – the latest craze is individual maids in individual gowns, making their statement at weddings.
Bridesmaids lately have been walking down the aisle in the brightest of colours, standing out in the bridal party in their own individual colour, design and statement gown. Bridesmaid gowns are now making as much of a statement as the bride’s, with the trend no longer leaning towards knee-length cocktail’s that can be worn again – it’s about finding that perfect stand-out gown for that once-in-a-lifetime event.
Angelina Baccini, designer of Baccini & Hill Bridesmaids, says that bright colours like blues, oranges and reds are hot at the moment for bridesmaid gowns that want to stand out, in fabrics such as Crinkle Georgette and Silk Charmeuse.
But with the bridal party in different colours and designs, and with so much to choose from, how does one get it right on the day? Whilst Angelina advises to “keep it simple and there will be no regrets”, the trick to this latest trend is to “ensure each individual girl looks great, by selecting a style that suits each girl’s body shape”.

Welcome to our ‘What’s Hot’ section, where we seek out the hottest bridal trends of the moment. This month, we ask EON RINGS, wedding ring designer and manufacturer, to help lead us in the right direction.
For 2010, “diamonds really are a girl’s best friend!”says Eon Rings, as every season “there is nothing more elegant and special than a row of brilliant cut diamonds to compliment any engagement ring and give it unique character to suit the bride”.
In terms of wedding band metals, Eon Rings has seen a huge rise in orders for Platinum wedding bands. “It is a strong, pure white metal and will not yellow overtime like white gold does. Thus saving you trips to your jeweller to repolish and whiten. You are also guaranteed that this metal will look flawless for decades to come!”
This metal is especially popular at the moment for the groom, especially for those who work outdoors as Platinum is very resistant to scratches, dints and imperfections! Although Platinum is a little more expensive than other metals, Eon Ring agrees “it is defiantly worth the investment!”
We asked Eon Rings a few other questions about investing in the perfect wedding ring:
What should brides and grooms look for when choosing their wedding rings?
Remember to keep it simple, your ring will be on your finger forever! Always match the tone of gold to your engagement ring and don’t go too wide, you want your wedding band to compliment your engagement ring, not out stage it. If you’re going for diamonds, always make sure they are certified!
How does Eon Rings help brides and grooms choose their perfect rings?
We design and manufacture our rings in Melbourne, Australia and have designers travelling the world, constantly keeping their fingers on the pulse in terms of latest trends and styles.
At Eon rings we know that there is no ordinary love and therefore there can never be no ordinary ring! We customise each ring to suit your individual requests, size and personal style.
Every diamond is set by hand and with the upmost precision, and finished rings do not make it to the jewellery stores until they have been subjected to a meticulous inspection.
What tips do you have for maintaining the look of your wedding band?
We recommend cleaning your rings once a year at your local jeweller.
What ideas do you have for Brides who want their wedding ring to be unique?
The most important thing to consider when purchasing your wedding ring is it will compliment and suit your engagement ring. Some brides today are taking it even further and not wearing an engagement ring but choosing an extravagant wedding band instead which also looks very elegant and different.
What sets your company apart?
An Eon registration card is given with each Eon Ring purchase. This certifies that it is manufactured to the carat desired and has passed Eon’s stringent quality control process.
When you purchase an Eon Ring, your individual wedding ring will be serial numbered and registered with Eon Rings. This entitles you to a lifetime warranty against any manufacturing faults and imperfections.
Most importantly, at Eon rings, we understand that a Wedding is a once in a lifetime occasion and your ring will sit on your finger for a lifetime. Therefore we offer three complimentary re-sizes of one size up or down per ring and also complimentary cleaning and polishing.
Welcome to our ‘Industry Insider’ section, where we chat personally with Australia’s leading wedding retailers about their product. This month we focus on florists and catch up with Virginia Chorley from The Bouquets of Ashca Jolie.
THE BOUQUETS OF ASHCA JOLIE - Virginia Chorley
How did you get started as a wedding florist?
I have been a florist for over 14 years working for some amazing places along the way. During my career I started a family, but still wanted to work with flowers; so from home I began focusing on bridal flowers which allowed me to be with my children and slowly build up my business. I have specialised in bridal flowers now for about four years.
What is the best part of your job?
The best part of my job would be meeting some really great brides that I create a very strong bond with. As my whole focus is on weddings, every weekend is always different; no two weddings are ever the same which makes my job very enjoyable.
How would you describe your personal flower arranging style?
My personal style of arranging flowers is more modern however, I enjoy creating the traditional styles as well, which always have my modern twist to the overall design.
What makes your company unique?
I think what makes my company unique is that we solely focus on flowers for weddings, including the bridal party, church and reception venue. I also offer a very personal service of going to the bride for the consultation, which means the bride can relax in their own home and doesn’t have to worry about coming to my studio.
What are the current trends for wedding flowers?
I am finding that the current trends are leaning towards flowers that have a very 'vintage' feel and look about them. Brides are really focusing on creating a 'theme' for the wedding, from the dresses, flowers right through to the look of the venue and set up. Flower colour trends at the moment are creams and whites to antique and aubergine colours, with moss coloured foliages.
What inspires you?
Each bridal couple’s personality inspires me to create something that is unique and is a reflection of them. Colours, textures of flowers also inspire me to put something together that looks amazing. There are some overseas floral designers who have also inspired me and have helped me take my work to a different level.
How do you help a bride decide what kind of bouquet she should have for herself and the bridal party?
The best thing is to establish the design and colour of the dress the bride and bridal party are wearing, and then we discuss what types of bouquets that will suit the dress' and not overtake it. Bridal flowers are a very important part of the day just as much as the dress however, we definitely do not want the flowers to overpower the dress; it should be complimenting instead.
What type of flowers should a bride choose for an autumn wedding?
There are a great range of flowers that are in season for autumn, such as roses, tuberose, gardenias, hydrangea and stephanotis. However Bridal Flowers are generally chosen by what the bride loves.
What is your favorite flower for weddings?
My favorite flowers for weddings vary each season. I love the fact that roses are available all year round. In summer I love to use David Austin roses, and in autumn I love using Bouvardia, and Stephanotis. I also love using succulents in bouquets which is becoming more and more popular.
What are some things brides should look for when looking for a florist?
When you choose your wedding florist it is important to have a great connection and trust with them, which will make you feel confident using them on your big day. A wedding florist will play a very special role in your wedding, you should never feel rushed during your consultation and you should be able to ask as many questions as you like.
